Mourinho's assistant Aitor Karanka instead faced the media and answered questions amidst rumours of a rift between Mourinho and the club's sporting director Jorge Valdano.

Mourinho has demanded backing from the club over his complaints against perceived refereeing injustices.

Following a narrow 1-0 home win over Sevilla on Sunday, Mourinho said he would ask for a private meeting with club president Florentino Perez.

Mourinho waved a piece of paper listing 13 supposed errors by the match referee, Carlos Clos Gomez.

Mourinho's comments have prompted speculation in the Spanish media over the coach's relationship with Valdano.

That's how it was decided. The manager had a game the other day, we had a chat and it was decided that I would speak today.
I think that there is a good relationship. The manager doesn't have any problem with anybody at the club. In any club there are different points of view, there was a disagreement, nothing more.

Karanka insists the team remain focused on today's game with Levante.

He says the club's supporters, have nothing to be concerned about.

"I don't think that we have to explain much to the fans either. They are aware of things, and what we want is unity, for everyone to be in the same boat and a good result against Levante tomorrow. If we can't completely kill off the tie tomorrow, then we hope to almost do so. Whoever speaks in the press conference, what the fans want is that we are all at Cibeles [the fountain in Madrid where players and fans celebrate victory] come the end of the season.
